HAWERA HORSES

TEAM FOR WANG A NUT

GUINEAS CANDIDATES ALCHEMIC AND LOWENBERG [nv TELEGRAPH OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAWERA. Monday With approximately 60 representatives likely to be in action, the prospects of South Taranaki horses during the Spring racing campaign appear to be better than has been the case for many years. The two and three-year-olds in particular are a very formidable lot, while it is improbable that there will be an absence of a firstclass handicapper, as was the case last season. Twenty-four horses from this district will be seen out at Wanganui, which, taken all round, is the strongest contingent sent by the local trainers to a meeting outside Taranaki for a considerable time.

Soloist did not jump quite as well as was expected at New Plymouth, but nevertheless Ins third was a creditable effort. He should have benefited by the race and is sure to have many friends at Wanganui. Golden Hair has been puzzling local track-watchers lately, her trials being n mixture of smart and indifferent efforts. She seems to have become rather sour again. •

15otl> Lowcnberg and Alchemic have improved considerably since racing at New Plymouth, and they should be in fine trim for tho Wanganui Guineas. It is difficult to choose between the pair for Saturday's big event, but Lowenberg may not handle the turning track as well as the Ljjckham colt. Likely Two-year-olds

With Brilliancy, Waiongona and GayChief engaged in the Wanganui Debutante Stakes on Saturday, the prospects of Hawera stables annexing the first two-year-old event of the new season look bright. Of the trio, Gay Chief makes most appeal, for he is well forward and his speed out of tho barrier should bo a big asset on the turning Wanganui track. The Waverley-trained Kaola appears to be moro solid now than at any previous stago of his career, his defeat of a fairly strong field in the hack hurdles at New Plymouth being an attractive performance, while he also ran second to Clarion Call at Marton on Saturday. While he may never be of much class, Kaola should pay his way in hurdle races at the minor meetings.

Ingenuity may not fulfil her Wanganui engagements, as she is still rather backward. Formerly of a rather spiritless disposition, this Australian-bred mare is putting more dash into her work at present and promises to be much improved this season.

M. Conway has returned the three-year-old filly Exquisite to her owner, Mr. W. R. S. Brewer, of Waverley. She will be hacked about on the farm during the summer prior to being taken in hand again for the autumn. This good-looking daughter of Lord Quex and Recherche is of a typo likely to improve with age. Fersen Working Well

Fersen is working ' really well at present, his track efforts last week being first-class. Last season he showed his best form over middle distances, but, nevertheless, the seven and a-quarter furlongs journey of the Seafield Handicap at Wanganui on Thursday may not be too short for him. Fersen looks the best proposition for important handicap honours Hawera has produced during the past two or three seasons, and it will come as a surprise to the majority of Hawera trackwatchers if he fails to make the grade.

Svlvanus is pleasing by tho manner in which she hits out in training, although so far nothing of a serious nature has been done with her. Tt is unlikely that she will be required to race before Christmas. Since tho tracks have become firmer there has been a decided improvement in the track efforts of Arouse. He should not be long in winning a race for his owner-trainer, J. Brown. NOTES FROM EVERYWHERE TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP The trainer-jockey W. Fl. Jones formerly of Ellerslie, has now taken up residence at Oamaru, and has with him Rona Bay. The five-year-old mare Wahine Beihi, whose form last season after winning a race at Thames was disappointing, has lately been working well at Te Rapa. 4 ______ Before leaving for Australia the trainer It. E. Hatch disposed of Te Rangitumau to Mr. W. Smart, and tho gelding is now at Trentham under the charge of J. A. Nelson. Tho Hawera trainer R. Brough had the two-year-old filly Waiongona, by Colossus —Just So, at Marton last Saturday. and tho youngster was allowed to stride along up the ' straight. Wrtiongona is not very tall, but she is sturdy and handles herself rather well. The two-year-old Chudley Royal, by Paper Money from the All Red marc Red Queen, " dam of Master Clarence, is one of the m6st promising juveniles in work at Riccarton. He is trained for Mr. C. Holdsworth by F. Holmes and last Saturday reeled off half-a-mile in fast time. Chudley Ro.yal is to contest the John Grigg Stakos at Ashburton on September 21. One of tho first of the progeny of Laughing Prince is a two-year-old chestnut gelding from Enthusiasm. Tho youngster is the property of Mr. T. A. Duncan and, although ho has not yet been broken in, he is being well cared for before commencing his education for racing. A well-grown chestnut, with a silver mane and tail, ho has not yet been named, but is known to his attendant as Peter Pan, owing to similarity in colour and markings to tho good Australian performer.
