ACROSS WHITCOMBE PASS
SEVERE WINTER CONDITIONS A crossing of the Southern Alps from Canterbury to Westland by way of Whitcoinbo Pass —believed to be tho first in severe winter conditions—was made by a party of three members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club recently. Continuous bad weather confined tho party to huts in the llakaia river-bed for Eomo days, but the weather cleared after they had abandoned all hope of crossing the pass and had moved «omo distance down the river on their return to Christchurch.
Thereafter an exceptionally fast trip was made over the pass, although tho weather was very cold and variable.
