An application that had been before the authority since the last sittings and in which evidence had been heaiid both for and against at Whangarei and Kaitaia, that of Hutley's Motors, was finalised. This application was for tlje right to extend theii present Awanui-Otiria railway station passenger service to Whangarei. Objections were lodged by Taaffe's Motors, E. Gray and the Railway Department. In support of the application Mr. T. S. Houston, chairman of the Mangonui Hospital Board and president of the Kaitaia Farmers' Union, and R. M. Kawiti, chief of the Waiomio native settlement, near Eawakawa, through which the intended service would pass, gave evidence. A letter objecting to the granting of the service was read from the Bay of Islands County Council and froirf Pearson's Motors, operators from Ohaeawai to Otiria. It was pointed out by Mr. Gray when objecting to the granting of the licence that if this licence were granted then the other services operating from the far north would be forced for their own protection also to apply to run to Whangarei, and the position that had occurred before the Transport Authority was appointed would be repeated, all the road services running to Whangarei and a restricted time-table being operative on the Whangarei northward section of the railway. After a lengthy discussion the application was refused. The authority will give a written judgment. The application of C. Runciman, who operates a goods service from Whangarei to the far north twice weekly, for an extra vehicle authority and also various amendments to hia route and time-table was considered. After hearing the evidence the authority refused the application for a return route from Kaitaia, Herekino and Broadwood, and adjourned the application for an additional vehicle authority and the other amendments applied for until the next sittings of the authority.
