BOBBY CALF TRADE

IMPROVED CONDITIONS INVESTIGATIONS BEING MADE STATEMENT BY MINISTER [from OUR OWN correspondent! HAMILTON, Sunday Advice that alleged irregularities in connection with the transport of bobby calves were being investigated is contained in a communication received by the Waikato Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals from the Hon. C. E. Macmillan, Minister of Agriculture. The department's officers were going i:.ito the matter very carefully with a view to endeavouring to remove the causes for serious complaints. " I note what you say regarding the calves of one day old being sent to the works," stated Mr. Macmillan, "and I am very much surprised that this should be done, seeing that when they reach the works they only go to swfjll the condemnations which have to be made when animals which are too immature are examined. The measures now being taken should have the effect of bringing about an improvement." A letter received by the society from the Railway Department pointed out that when ordinary goods waggons are supplied for the transport of bobby calves this is done at the request of the dealers, who seem to prefer this type of truck, as it is easilj- loaded and unloaded. At a meeting of the Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals last week tlie inspectors reported that conditions generally were improved, especially regarding tho sending of immature calves to the freezing works.
