FLAX FIBRE PRODUCTION
COMMENCEMENT EXPECTED VISIT TO PLANTATIONS [BY TELEGRAPH—OWN COn RESPONDENT J WHAKATANE, Tuesday The visit of Mr C P. Karl Hurst, engineer" to the Amalgamated Flax Company, Mr. G. Hees, solicitor, of Auckland, and Dr. Hill, agricultural instructor to tho Seddon Memorial College, indicates that the directors of the Amalgamated Flax Fibre Company intend to undertake the manufacture of flax products in Whakatane in the near future. The party visited tho company's plantations in the various parts of the Rangitaiki and alsi. inspected the portion of tho freezing works which lias been secured by the company for the purpose of a mill. Measurements were taken of the building and sufficient data was obtained by tho engineer to enable liini to make the required structural alterations and furnish tho necessary machinery. It will bo remembered that some two years ago tho three flax companies operating in the district amalgamated with the object of commencing the manufacture of flax fibre. Phey took •jver tho freezing works, but later disposed of a portion of tho property to Whnkatnne Paper Mills, Limited. The* Amalgamated Flax Fibre Company has retained two of the large concreto buildings together with the men's quarters and these premises, it is expected, will shortly'ho occupied for the production of flax fibre.
