SPEED ON LAND
CAMPBELL'S QUEST MOTORIST AT NEW YORK EARLY ATTEMPT IN UTAH SCIENTIFIC ASPECTS V By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received August 28, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, Aug. 27 The British racing motorist Sir Malcolm Campbell arrived in New York to-day and shortly will make his sixth attempt to break the world's land speed record at the salt beds in Utah. Sir Malcolm said he would drive over the great salt beds near W endover. Concerning the possibility of reaching a speed of 300 miles an hour he said : " I am none too sanguine about it. , " Apart from the fact that I do not know the course well it is 4200 ft. above sea level. Therefore I shall lose 18 per cent of my power. However I hope to gain 14 per dent through lessened wind resistance. Also tho firm pavementlike structure of the salt beds may be some advantage." The Bluebird car has already been despatched to Utah and it is expected that Sir Malcolm may bo able to make his trial run next Monday.
The visitor said that more important than his attempt on the speed record was the fact that he would be making scientific tests never tried before. That data alone, even if the present record stood, would be well worth the trip. An electrically-driven camera would record the readings of all the instruments on the dashboard, showing how much power was swallowed up in overcoming wind resistance and rolling resistance. " We have theories, but no proofs," said Sir Malcolm. " You have no chance to watch the instruments and try to remember what they redord while travelling at 275 miles ton hour. My car is not changed since I was at Davtona. It has 40 tyres." Sir Malcolm is accompanied by his son Donald, aged 15.
