MORE EMPLOYMENT
MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY ENCOURAGING FIGURES [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION"] WELLINGTON, Wednesday An increase of from 20 to 25 per cent in the number of workers employed in typical manufacturing establishments in the four chief centres of the Dominion last month, compared with July, 1934, is shown in a report presented to the Dominion council of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation.
It will be surprising, says the secretary of the federation, if the complete official statistics, when published, will show anything less than an increase of 9000 during the period mentioned, or an increase of less than 12,000 sinco 1933. Among others the following are some of the sections of industry that are reported to be showing a rapid expansion in the amount of employment that they can provide:—Gas and electric ranges, tins and canisters, dairy equipment, electric bowsers, agricultural implements, builders and plumbers' supplies, and electrical appliances. Woollen mills and clothing factories, the secretary added, are reported to be working to full capacity, and footwear factories are also busy. A striking development was the manufacture, asi apart from assembly, of wireless sets. In the last year alone employment in motor assembly plants and auxiliary concerns had increased by nearly 600.' Directly and indirectly, manufacturing industries, it was claimed, must have given employment to at least 20,000 more persons than were employed two years ago.
