The latter put up a splendid showing and was only defeated by 27 points 'o 25 in an even game. The local team <Jid most of the attacking and its backs played good football The Hawke's Bay forwards, however, dominated play and sound tackling by the visitors was a feature of" the game. The success of Auckland was due to the splendid, play of L. Brown. at centrethreequarter. Besides scoring two tries. Brown paved the way for two others. Hapi,. on, the wing, also played a good game and proved a dangerous player on attack. He. was a-former Hawke's Bay, Rqgby Union representative. Murray, at fullback, and Bickerton, five-eighths, were the weak links in, the, Auckland team. Watene was easily (he best forward on the ground, and his good tacklin« often checked dangerous movements, ■< . Kihi nnd Gemmell, the Hawke's Bay five-eighths, played good football; The former often made nice openings. Poi, lit halfback, also did useful work. Much credit -is due to the forwards for a bustling game. Purcell, who scored three tries, w&s always prominent. while Ransfield, and Wano also played well. The ground conditions were good and there was n fair attendance. For Auckland, > Brown ,'2), Hapi, Turei, Skelton and i Watene scored tries. Watene converted two i tries, and' Turei one try. For Hawke's I Bay. Purcell scored three tries, and Ponga r ,and Taylor one each. Ransfield kicked s three penalty goals and converted one try. s Wano converted one try. Mr. A. Saunders was referee.
