ADELPHI TERRACE

DEMOLITION DECISION FAMOUS LONDON AREA British Wireless RUGBY, Aug. 25 After many false alarms it is now definitely announced that the demolition of the famous Adelphi Terrace overlooking the Thames will be begun early next year. Tenants there and in other buildings on a considerable site have received notice to quit by March 25. The proposed development probably will include the construction of a huge block of flats with provision for office accommodation for many societies and organisations whose headquarters have •long been in the area. The demolition involves the labyrinth of arches and vaults on which the present buildings stand and which have acquired an almost legendary repute. The area known as Adelphi was laid out by the four Adams Brothers toward the end of the 18th century. In the present century it has been the home of many literary celebrities, including the late Mr. Thomas Hardy, Sir James Barrio and Mr. Bernard Shaw.
