FAREWELL SOCIALS Mrs. G. W. Foote, of Ruawai, has been visiting Mrs W. A. Christiansen, of Mill Road. Accompanied by Mrs. T. B. Marshall and Mrs. Christiansen, Mrs. Foote left on Saturday morning by motor-car to spend a holiday in Auckland. Mrs. I. F. McKenzie, of School Avenue, Whangarei, and Mr. McKenzie, are spending holidays in Oamaru. Mrs. Eric Baume, who has been visitins Mrs. A. D. Jack, Bank Street, Whangarei, has returned to Sydney. Miss L. Williamson, of Takapuna, who spent a short holiday in Whangarei as the guest of Mrs. W. Stewart, of Hall Avenue, has returned to her home. Miss J. Stewart, of Hall Avenue, Wha ngarei, is spending a short holiday in Auckland. Mrs. D. Herdman, of Knikohe, has been on a short holiday to Whangarei. Mrs. C. Clark, of Mill Road, Whangarei, and Mrs. G. Lornie, arc visiting Deep Water Cove as the guests of Mrs. Cross. Miss A. Higginson, of Hospital Road, Whangarei, is spending the school holidays in Wellington. M isses M. Millington, D. Steele and C. Piper, of Whangarei, are spending a short holiday at the Chateau. Miss Marjorie Steedman, of Whangarei, is on a holiday visit to Rotorua and Tauranga. Mrs. C. Clark, of Mill Road, entertained a number of the performers in the recent Institute Drama Festival in Whangarei. The guest of honour was the adjudicator, Mrs. Hartshorn. Mesda ines G. X. Morris and R. Lindesay were hostesses last week at an enjoyable party held in the Coronation tearooms, Whangarei, and given as a farewell to Mrs. A. L. Fetch, who has left to live in Opotiki. The rooms were arranged with bowls of daii'odils. Bouquets of cyclamen and violets were presented to the guest of honour. Prizes for the afternoon's competitions were won by Mrs. A. L. Anderson and Mrs. 0. Dunnett. On behalf of Mrs. Fetch's many friends the hostesses made a presentation of a silver jug. The guests included Mrs. E. Wood, Mrs. L. Hanlon, Mrs. Gleary, Mrs. J. F. Tonkin, Mrs. T. Wright, Mrs. E. W. Thomson, Mrs. R. K. Trimmer, Mrs. 0. Dunnett, Mrs. H. E. Worsp, Mrs. A. L. Anderson, Mrs. W. Millington, Mrs. C. F. Miller, Mrs. G. Ludbrook, Mrs. D. Herdman (Kaikohe), Mrs. L. T. Pickmere, Mrs. S. Worsp, Mrs. H. W. Crawford, Mrs. Carnarvon, Mrs. Beveridge, Mrs. N. G. Powell, Mrs. Spencer Day, Mrs. H. Crane, Mrs. C. Finlayson, M rs. C. Mrs. W. Elliott presided at the monthly meeting of the Whangarei branch of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union. Special mention was made regarding three young missionaries, Misses L. Saunders and A. Cook and the Rev. E. G. Jansen, who are leaving the Dominion in September. The programme was a study of "Donald Eraser, of Livingstonia," Miss I. Killen giving a paper on the boyhood and youth of this outstanding missionary. The atmosphere was delightfully festive at the annual plain and fancy dress ball held by St. Francis Xavier Convent School, Whangarei. There were over 100 children in the grand march, the variety of dresses and colourings making the scene most attractive. Competition dances were won by Jean Reed, Douglas McLean, Ernie Conaghan, Mavis Draffin, Morton Conaghan, Silviir Anderson, Betty Green. Joseph Stewart, Mary McDonald, Noel Stockwell, John McCabe, Mavis Schon, Lois 'Donoghue, Tony Given, Coleen Neville, R. Soich, ' W. Greenslade, Frank Walls and Pat Lynch. An Irish jig and tap dance were performed by Marion Mitchell, and tambourine and tap dances by Ngaire and Molly O'Shea. Opportunity was taken by Mr. C. P. Butler, on behalf of the Whangarei Winter Show Committee, to present a cup and rosebowl won respectively by the Convent A and bantam teams at the recent Winter Show basketball competitions. Wintry conditions prevailed for the annual social and dance held at Maungatapere by tho Manngatapere branch of the Plunket Society. Songs were rendered by Mrs. S. Blanshard and the' Misses J. Macknv and Wilson, of Whangarei, while Miss Pelita .and her partner gave an exhibition of the ballroom tango and the quickstep. The Whangarei Ladies' Gardening Club held a sale of flowers and fruit, over £9 being realised. The sale was opened by tho Mayoress, Mrs. W. Jones, who stated the object of the function was to assist the funds of the Women's Relief Committee. She was presented with a bouquet of violets. The winners of competitions were Mrs. Pickmero, Mrs. Henderson, Miss Lang and Mrs. Elliott. The Ruakaka' Tennis Club's annual ball, held in the Mnta Hall last week, was well attended. The hall was decorated with streamers suspended from the ceiling with clusters of balloons.
