OVERWHELMED BY SLIP
WORKMAN FATALLY CRUSHED TRIPPED IN TRYING TO ESCAPE [by telegraph—OWN correspondent! NAPIER, Monday A sudden fall of earth in a cutting on Quarantine Island at 8.50 this morning resulted in the death of a workman, Thomas Sweetings, aged 35. He was completely buried in the debris and in spite of the feverish efforts of the men with whom he had been working, hajlf an hour elapsed before it was possible to extricate the body. Mr. Sweetings was engaged on a Public Works Department piece-work job on Quarantine Island, which is situated in Ahuriri Lagoon, about seven miles from Napier. He was working on the face of a cutting with another man, and his companion, who saw the slip coming, succeeded in jumping clear. Mr. Sweetings, however, tripped over a piece of timber in attempting to get away, and fell to the ground just as the full weight of the slip landed upon him. It is estimated that there were about 25 tons of debris in the fall, and when recovered the body was found to have been severely crushed.
