Charleston (West Coast). —Four weeks ended August 24, 13oz. lldwt., for 20 shifts of nine hours. The temporary stoning plant is working satisfactorily and it is hoped to increase the yardage after adjustments. GOLDFIELDS DREDGE Owing to the Shotover River being exceptionally low, the Goldfields Dredging Company's dredge has temporarily ceased operations. The low river renders it impossible to keep the working face opened out safely, so the continuance of dredging would probably leave the dredge stranded. Operations will be resumed as soon as the river rises. AUSTRALIAN PRICE OF GOLD The price fixed by the Commonwealth Bank for gold, including jewellery, lodged at the Melbourne Mint for the week ended August 16, was at the rate of £7 18s 8d a standard ounce <22 carats), equal to a premium of 103.72. Payment is made according to the assay value of gold. The price was 2jd lower on the week. The price an ounce fine was £8 13s Id, a fall of 3d on the week. REPORTS OF MANAGERS Mahakipawa (Marlborough). The south drive was continued another sft. when the bottom again came up level with the rails. The wash was very silty and poor so the face was stopped. As the gutter we have been following is about 230 ft. west of the one driven in the old days there appears to be ample room for another gutter between these two. The geophysical survey indicated that there was either a bench,of relatively flat bottom or another gutter possible at a slightly higher level within 75ft. to the east. With the idea of proving this we have started driving in an easterly direction from the top of the incline, that is, from a point 1515 ft. south by 110 ft. west. Dawn of Hope (Thames) .—The crosscut to intersect the hangingwall reefs has been advanced 6ft. and a little quartz is showing in the face, which 1 think will be the No. 2 reef. The trial crushing of one load from No. 2 winze gavo a return of soz. 7d\vt. of gold. Driving will be started from the low level crosscut, a distance of 100 ft., to get under this block, making a connection with Nos. 1 and 2 winzes. There will then be two largo blocks of ore opened up. Sarich and mate, tributers, crushed one load for 9oz. 7dwt.; Aro and mate, one load for 4oz.
