OBITUARY

MR. BARRY CONEY A well-known figure in music.nl circles in the Dominion for over 40 years, Mr. Barry Coney, died at his home in Henley Road, Mount Eden, on Sunday evening. A son of Mr. J. E. Coney, a former chief postmaster of Thames, Mr. Coney was educated at the Kauaeranga Boys' High School and the Thames High School, afterward joining the Bank of New Zealand. He possessed a fine bass voice, but it was not until he was approaching middle age that he decided to take up nuisic professionally. Leaving Auckland in 1907, Mr. Coney studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London, where he gained several awards. On his return to Auckland he became a teacher and singer of ! note. He was president of the Auckland Society of Musicians for six years and for over 15 years he was adjudicator in musical competitions all over the Dominion. Mr. Coney was a pianist of ability and was actively interested in amateur operatics. He was a member of the cast of Alfred Hill's comic opera "A Moorish Maid" in 1905. MR. GEORGE WILLIAM BOWRON [by telegbafh—own correspondent] DUNEDIN, Monday One of the best-known men in the commercial circles of Now Zealand, Mr. George William Bowron, died at Dunedin this morning, aged 65. Mr. Bowron was born at Fernside, near Rangiora. When 18 years of age he entered the employ of the National Bank. In 189S he joined Mr. Harry Guthrie, the mercantile fixm of Guthrie and Bowron being thus started. Some years later the business was formed into a company and rapidly expanded throughout New Zealand, having an office in each of the chief centres and owning its buildings in Wellington and Auckland. Mr. Bowron looked after the sales, and by general consent did that duty very capably. It- is no exaggeration to state that he know every town and village in the Dominion. He retired from the company in 1929, but continued to take an active interest in goldmining, being a director of the Okarito, Waitahu, Nokomai, and other companies. He married Miss Catherine Yorston, who survives her husband. There are also two sons. MRS. W. T. W. HUGHES [BY TKLECRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT! TE AROHA, Monday i The death has occurred of Mrs. Jane pughes, wife of Mr. AY. T. W. Hughes, of Ruakaka, Te Aroha. Born at Inverness, Scotland, 70 years ago, deceased came to New Zealand at the age of nine, in the sailing ship Helen Denny. Subsequently she married Mr. W. Norrell, who was Mayor of Te Aroha during the war years, and as Mayoress during that period Mrs. Norroll was an indefatigable worker iu social and charitable affairs. Some time after her husband's deat'h Mrs. Norrell married Mr. Hughes. Although living in retirement for some years, Mrs. Hughes continued her benevolent work, and will be sadly missed by the Te Aroha Presbyterian Church, St. Mary's Homes, and the To Aroha Benevolent Society.
