AFFAIRS IN AFRICA
POSSIBLE NEW STATE THE TWO RHODESIAS [from our own correspondent] CAPETOWN, July 22 The movement for the amalgamation of the two Rhodesias and Nyasaland has become one of the main plar.ks in the election platforms of several of the Legislative Council candidates in Northern Rhodesia. The formal election address of Mr. C. S. Knight, one of tho retiring members, is typical of the attitude of the majority of the candidates. "It is my definite opinion," Mr. Knight says, "that we should co-oper-ate with Southern Rhodesia, and if possible Nyasaland, to mako a selfgoverning colony or dominion of Rhodesia. I cannot see any other way of achieving freedom and tho development of the territory for the interest and well-being of tho people who live and have their homes here. "It is only by unity that there is a possibility of obtaining an extension of Rhodesia to tho western ocean arid a port thereon by way of a corridpr—the extension of tho Caprivi strip—along tho northern border of SouthWest Africa to tho sea. Although a Rhodesian port may not be necessary to-day, future development should be anticipated and proi'ision made therefor."
From Nynsalnnd pomoa tfre significnnt report of a speech by the Governor, Sir Harold Kittcrmnster, in which ho said thnt "sooner or later Nynsalnnd must link up with someone." Ho could accept that the European population wanted a change of government, ho said, but he was not certain about the natives. He said he supported largo units and that ho wns convinced that Nyasaland would not long continue on lier own.
