PACER DEFEATS CYCLIST
CONTEST OVER A MILE CHRISTCHURCH NOVELTY RACES [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday In a challenge match of one mile 011 the Addington trotting ground on Saturday, J. R. McKenzie's pacer Taxpayer beat H .G. Watson, the champion cyclist, from a flying start. Taxpayer took the lead passing the stands, where Watson tucked in behind Taxpayer and trailed him until -the straight was reached. There was a groat tussle over the last furlong, Taxpayer beating tlie cyclist by a head. The sectional times were:—Two furlongs, 345; half-mile, lm 9 2-ss; six furlongs, lm 46 l-ss; full distance, 2m 17 l-ss. In a walking race of one mile F. W. Dukes, the Canterbury champion, easily heat the trotter Fairyland in 10m 17s.
