BEWILDERED STEER

MAZE OF CITY TRAFFIC EXCITING STREET CHASE A black steer, which broke from a mob of cattle being driven to the saleyards in Melbourne on a recent night, wandered into the Elizabeth Street shopping area. It knocked a cyclist from his machine, smashed a headlamp on a motor-car, dented the radiator of another car, and narrowly missed shattering a shop window. The steer became bewildered by the traffic, and cable-train traffic was temporarily dislocated.

Constable L. .Jones jumped from a tram and chased the animal. Several volunteers went to his aid, and one, Mr. T. Shaw, threw himself at the animal's head in the approved steerthrowing fashion. The constablo applied his weight to the steer's head to keep it on the ground, but the animal sprang to»its feet, throwing the constable into the air and disJodging Mr. Shaw.

Terrified, the steer led its pursuers a chase among the traffic. It fell beneath the bumper bar of a motor-car and was promptly seized. Although the steer resisted vigorously, it was roped and pushed into a lane. After a struggle, three policemen placed the steer on a lorry from the police depot and took it to the pound.
