ASSOCIATION GAME

SENIOR GRADE MATCHES FALCON CUP COMPETITION FOUR TEAMS ELIMINATED ' The first series of matches in the Auckland Football Association's knock- ( out competition for the Falcon Cup produced hard and fairly interesting games, the linn playing fields permitting the players to adopt more open tactics. Ponsonby avenged its recent defeat by North Shore, eliminating the latter team at Blandford Park in a convincing manner, while in the cur-tain-raiser game Eastern Suburbs was defeated bj r Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys. Metro-College again proved too good for Thistle at Western Springs, while Y.M.C.A. secured a close decision over Comrades at Victoria Park. Following were the results: — Ponsonby, 4; North Shore, 2. Mount Albert Old Boys, 4; Eastern Suburbs, 2. Metro-College, 3; Thistle, 2. Y.M.C.A., 1; Comrades, 0 WIN FOR PONSONBY FOUR COALS TO MULLANE In view of their previous display In the championship game, it was anticipated that the meeting of North Shore and Ponwonby in the Falcon Cup match would provide a sterling exhibition, but the match failed to produce a good standard. The ground was , in fair condition at Blandford Park and play swung from end to end. Superior finish- j ing by Ponsonby, which was without the services of Innes and Jones, resulted in North Shore being two goals down at the interval. The second spell produced n dour struggle, but Ponsonby prevailed. Watson gave a good exhibition in Ponsonby's goal. Sims excelled on defence, and he and Cook with long clearances often changed defence to attack. Swales. Hoggard and Masters stemmed many raids. The lastn-imed combined well with Mullane, who played a sound game, and Farnan. Wiseman and McCallum swung the ball about, and, with Riggans or the alert in the centre, the line was a dangerous combination. Cowie has played many better games in goal for North Shore, two of the shots that beat him appearing very easy ones to save. Gerrard and C. Eknian were sound, but the open play by the opposing forwards harassed them considerably. With Colebourne playing too deep, there was a large gap on the right. Walters endeavoured to force the paco and gave the forwards many good opportuniti.es. but Archer upset several attacking movements by faulty positional play. McClusky led the attack, but was well marked and could not distribute the play. Blackie received an early injury, but, nevertheless, he and Stevenson showed up in some pretty movements. On the left Hitchens and Ekman were aggressive, but their finishing was far from accurate. On the run of the play Ponsonby deserved its win, but a margin of one goal would have been a better reflex. Mullane scored all four goals for Ponsonby, while TC. Ekman and Archer netted for North Shore Mr, R. C. Brighton was referee. FAST ENCOUNTER OLD BOYS SUCCESSFUL In a fast and interesting encounter at Blandford PaTk, Mount Albert Grammar Old Boys took the decision from Eastern Suburbs. The exchanges were well contested throughout, although Mount Albert claimed a slight superiority by reason of better combination. Eastern Suburbs comwell nnd held the* lead durincr trie first half, but Mount Albert managed to level the scores just before the interval. In j the second half Mount Albert saw much j more of the play, and, as a result, was | able to score another two goals. I Bright combination between the Mount i Albert forwards was a feature of the match, ! but they met with stiff opposition from the ■Eastern Suburbs backs. Both teams had i strong and aggressive half lines, the open methods of the Eastern Suburbs players giving the Mount Mber f defence cause for worr y- i The Mount Albert custodian. Warren, gave a finished display, showing good anticipation in dealing with a number of shots. Holdsworth and Shaw were both sour.d. while assistance on defence came from Ward and Horrocks. Bright work was performed in the vanguard by Noble. .Tepson and Fyfie. the players varying their tactics in a very effective manner. Wvnne gave an active exhibition in Eastern Suburbs' goal, warding off a number of raids by means of good anticipation and clean handling. Ho had little chance with the shots that heat him. Although inclined to he a trifle s'ow on recovery, the Stone brothers provided Eastern Suburbs with a solid defence. McDonald. Gay and Diamond showd force in the halves, although their passing could have been more accurate. Welch revealed speed in the forwards, and he received cood support from A Welch, Fl->shmnn and Oilbrrt. Coal? were scored for Mount Albert Old "Rovs hv Fyfie (2). Woods and .Tepson. while Flnahman and Gilbert netted for Eastern Suhurbs. Mr. G. Shand was referee. THISTLE OUTCLASSED * METRO-COLLEGE'S VICTORY The Western Springs ground was in good condition for the meeting of Thistle and Metro-College on Saturday. Although scientific football was at a discount, a fast and willing game resulted in Metro-College eliminating its rivals in a very convincing manner. Thistle had the advantage of tho sun and wind in the first spell, but. MetroCollege adopted bustling tactics which prevented Thistle from settling down. How- | ever, a lucky goal gave Thistle the lead at ! half-time. With the wind in its favour : Metro-College dominated the second half, ! its goalkeeper handling only four times. ! while the Thistle goal was bombarded from ; all angles. j Gavan was safe in Metro-College citadel. . although Thistle's second goal seemed a } ridiculously easy one. Tlolmnn and Speed i broke up many attacks, the latter being | quick in recovery. In the second half they I made use of the wind and sent their for--1 wards to the attack several times. Cronin, i in the pivot position, was equally Bound on | defence and attack, while J. Dallimoro com- ! billed well with his forwards. C. Flygar I initiated several dangerous attacks. The ! pick of tho front line were McDougall. at | inside right, nnd Dean, outside loft, two I juniors whose Hhots were always on the mark. H. Dallimore, on the right wing, combined well and sent over several dan gerous centres. A. Flyger, at inside left, provided thrust and made many openings. ! but Clenl. who was inclined to wander out i of position, was off form, otherwise the ! score in Metro-College favour must have i heen larger. Gerrard appeared shaky in the first spell, | but later ho gave a sterling exhibition under ' gruelling conditions. Polwin was faster than • i Williams, but bath provided stern opposition. Wright gave a good defensive display in tho halves, while 11. Watson, a junior, showed more constructive play than his hrother, W. Watson. Angus led tho forward lino but was allowed little scopo to distribute the play. Woodß and Dunsmore were not allowed to play their usual studiod game. On the left, Kay and Hislon made ground, but a stern defence gave tho wingman little chance. Dean, A. Flyger and Cleal scored for Metro-C'olleire, while Angus and W. Watson netted for Thistle. Mr. J. Stewart was referee. A CLOSE DECISION Y.M.C.A. BEATS COMRADES There was a large attendance at Victoria Park on Saturday, when Y.M.C.A. and Comrades staged a fast game. Ground conditions were ideal, but a tricky wind caused several mistakes to be made. Comrades' inability to finalise its movements and slightly better constructive play by Y.M.C.A. gavo the latter victory by the only goal scored. Facing the wind and the sun in the first apell, the Y.M.C.A, defence had a difficult time, but Smith gave a sound display in keeping his goal intact. Ross and Dobson proved robust tacHors. clearing the ball to advantage. Breaking up many attacks, Chapman was also instrumental in placing his forward line on attack with well-judged passes. Ho received sound support from Sims and Garner. Humphries, at centreforward, distributed the play well, and Murane and Deoki on the wings made ground with long passes, which allowed Page and Churchill to harass tho opposing defence. Yearbury was responsible for a sound exhibition in Comrades' goal. The open methods of Y.M.C.A. gave McKenzie and Saunders an amount of extra work. Egan played a spoiling game and had a nice understanding with his forwards, but Crocker was out of position too often. Evans and Francis on the right were always dangerous, while Fletcher and Hewlett, who gave a good individual display, also worked into

pood scoring positions. The line a. •whole attempted too much finesse , C ' oß ® T' a o r ' ters, when first-time shots would have been more profitable. Churchill scored for \.M.C.A. Mr. H. Firth was refoice. LOWER GRADE RESULTS Second Grade—Dacre Cup Knock-out Competition: Thistle A. 6, Onehunga B, 0; Onehunga A, 6, Suburbs. 1.
