APPROVED CANDIDATES PREPARATIONS FOR CONTEST FOUR MEMBERS RETIRING DUNEDIN CENTRAL SEAT [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WELLINGTON, Wednesday Tho National Political Federation, which was formed by the welding of the Reform and United interests in the present Coalition Government, is becoming increasingly active throughout the Dominion in the preparation for the election, and to-day, before his departure for the South Island, the Dominion organiser, Mr. D. Ardell, gave the names of approved candidates who would support the Government. Of the seats at present held by the Government, all but four will bo contested by the sitting members. The exceptions are Wairarapa, Bay of Plenty, Awarua and Clutha, the Hon. A. D. McLeod, Mr. K. S. Williams, Mr. P. A. de la Perrelle, and Mr. P. McSkimming having announced their retirement from these constituencies respectively. Mr. J. Hargest will stand for Awarua, leaving Invercargill vacant for a new candidate. In view of the announcement by the Speaker, the Hon. Sir Charles Statham, that he intends to retire, the Nationalists have also decided to contest Dunedin Central. The following is a list of the approved Nationalist candidates, apart from sitting members, with the electorates for which they have been announced : Bay of Islands. —Mr. It. B. Russell. Bay of Plenty.—Mr. J. T. Merry. Auckland Fast.—Mr. H. JP. Burton. Waimarino. —Mr. C. A. Boles, Wairarapa. —Mr J. W. Card. Wellington East.—Mr. 0. C. Mazengarb. Wellington' North.—Mr. C. A. L. Tread well. Nelson.—Mr. H. Everett. Timaru Mr. W. Thomas. Dunedin Central. —Mr. W. H. Shepherd. Dunedin North. —Mr. A. S. Falconer. Clutha.—Mr. J. A. Roy. No decision has yet been reachod regarding the Thames and Gisborne scats and several in the main centres.

AUCKLAND SUBURBS SEAT MR. DARLOW APPROACHED Representatives of the Democrat Party have approached Mr. W. 13. Darlow, of Birkenhead, a member of the Auckland Harbour Board and the Waiteiiiata Electric-Power Board, and asked him to contest the Auckland Suburbs seat at the general election. Mr. Darlow said last night that he might consider contesting the seat when he knew more about the Democrat Party's platform "You cannot pledge yourself to support an organisation whose policy is unknown even to its supporters," he stated. THE FRANKLIN ELECTORATE SUPPORT FOR Mil. J. N. MASSEY Well-nttended meetings of the supporters of Mr. J. N. Massey, Government M.P. for Franklin, were held at Papak.ira and Bombay yesterday In both centres strong committees were formed and all present pledged their support for Mr. Massey's candidature in the coming election. The meeting at Pa pakura held last evening was presided over by Mr. H. E. McEntee, chairman of the Papakura Town Board. Important items of Government legislature, passed during recent sessions, were discussed and a number of questions were answered by Mr. Massey. RANGITIKEI CONTEST INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE An announcement that he will contest the Rangitikei seat as an Independent has been made by Mr. B. H. 1 Whiteman, of Wnnganui. Mr. Whiteman, who paid a shortjvisit to Auckland this week, said he had considered joining the Democrat Party, but had decided to have nothing to do with it. L'ow, was approached yesterday by representative electors and requested to allow his name to go forward as a candidate foi the Stratford seat. Mr. Pow later said his plans would be influenced to a great extent by the state of his health. The present member for Stratford is Mr. W. J. Poison, who was originally elected as an Independent but who is now a Government member. For some years he has been Dominion presidont of tho Farmers' Union.
