OPEN QUARREL

TWO NAZI LEADERS REGIME IMPERILLED EXTREMISTS' ACTIVITIES DR. SCHACHT'S PROTEST Hy Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received August 21, 8.25 p.m.) LONDON. AUK. 21 The News Chronicle's Berlin correspondent says an open quarrel, which may have far-reaching consequences to the Hitler regime, has broken out between the Nazi extremists, led by Dr Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda, and Dr. Schacht, Minister of Economics, following Dr. Schacht's speech on Sunday. Dr. Goebbels ordered the speech to be heavily censored before publi cation, especially the portion in which Dr. Schacht openly attacked the extremist Nazis, whose violent methods, he said, were hindering Germany's economic recovery. Dr. Schacht, supported by powerful Conservative industrialists, also by the Conservative element of the Reichswehr, intends to place, before Herr Hitler the realities of the situation. He will also make a further attempt to persuade Herr Hitler to call off the anti-Jewish campaign.

It is reported that Dr. Schacht is ready to resign unless ho is assured that Germany's serious economic situation will be secured against disturbance by violent outside elements.

Dr. Schacht, speaking at Konigsberg, at the opening of the East German Fair on Sunday, attacked ttie Jew-bait-ing methods of Herr Julius Streicher, head of the anti-Semitic movement. He declared that the Nazi programme, while it debarred Jews from comradeship and citizenship, admitted them to the operation of the laws which were now being framed. The Jews, therefore, could not arbitrarily be victimised. This also applied to the religious question. Germany stood midway in the greatest task in history. Whoever interfered with the Government's polic.v did a dangerous thing. Priests must not intermingle with politics, and Jews must realise that they were no longer dominant in the State. Leadership, not individual action, must solve these problems. The people's earnings were safe, but rigorous economy must be exercised.
