TOWN HALL RECEPTION

THE JAPANESE VISITORS REPRESENTATIVE GATHERING A DECORATIVE SETTING In honour of the visit to Auckland of the Japanese Goodwill Mission, beaded by His Excellency Katsuji Debuchi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, a reception was given by the Mayor and councillors of Auckland in the Town Hall last evening. There was a large gathering of representative guests, who were received on arrival by the Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, and Mrs. Davis, and the town clerk, Mr. J S. Brighain, and Mrs. Brighain. Mrs. Davis was wearing a trained frock of midnight blue craquelle relieved with silver lame, and Mrs. Brighain was in black ring velvet. The hall had been beautifully decorated for the occasion and lit with golden electric lights, which threw a soft and restful light over the gathering. Long ropes of feathery silver birch glowing with tiny lights were suspended from the central electroliers to the walls of the gallery, forming a light canopy overhead. The stage was transformed into a garden, banked at the back with tall clusters of bamboo foliage and exotic plants, among which were placed bowls of arum lilies, while across the front of the stage were pots of richlycoloured cyclamen, freesias and daffodils. Bamboo, palms and hanging baskets of ferns were also grouped around the sides of the hall, while mirrors, reflecting the golden lights overhead, panelled the walls. Ihe wjiole of the tloor space had been arranged as n lounge, furnished with comfortable chairs and heated with glowing radiators to counteract the cold of a winter evening. In the siipper room fronds of nikau palms sereejied the pillars, while the tables had been arranged with crystal vases of irises and daffodils. A brief musical programme had been arranged, which included a Maori welcome and poi dance by Mrs. L. Harold King, songs by Mr. Robert Simmers, and items bv the Auckland Municipal Band Mr. * Leo Whitaker acted as accompanist.
