NEWS FROM THE TRACK

VISITORS WORK STEADILY CONnmON OF PROSY BOY CANDIDATES FOR SATURDAY BY ARCHER Conditions ware very unfavourable foi training operations at Ellorslie yesterday, the weather being very cold and squally. However, it was an off morning and 11.0 fast work was attempted, nearly all the horses being restricted to useful pacing on the sand One ot the most interesting workers was the Hawke's Bay hunter Prosv Boy, who is a fancied candidate for the Pakuranga Hunt Cup. Prosy Boy's condition indicates that he has done well since winning the Manawatu Hunt Cup last month and tie is a good type of gelding who should race promineuth 011 Saturday. Another visiting hunter to mako an appearance w,t> Lanner, a five-year-old gelding by a Rakanoa colt from a Spalpeen mare He hails from Thames and is owned and trained by Mr. It. P Williams. Lanner has not vet raced, but 110 is in hard condition. His breeding is rather obscure, but Hakanoa was bv Valkyrian from Fanny Hoinei and raced with success in Auckland some seasons ago. Novice Hunters The novice hunters King Rod and Parklnirst appear to have made some progress in tne past few weeks and their latest work has been quite satisfactory for horses in their class. Both may be capable of running prominently in the Greenniount Steeplechaso, as the opposition is not particularly strong. Winding Trail, who is engaged in the Harris Memorial Hack Hurdles on Saturday, is a six-year-old gelding by Surveyor from Daymost, by Foremost, and is trained at Pukekohe by F. R. Foster. Up to the present Winding Frail has nc* raced and lack of experience may bo against him when he makes his initial appearance in public.

I.ornacre, a candidate for the Sylvia Park Handicap on Saturday, is an unraoed three-year-old golding by Acre from Miss Vera, hence a full-brother to Sunny Downs. Lornacro is owned by Mr. J. Cieary and b in the same stable as Prince Acre, being trained at Te Rapa by A Winder. The latter i 9 also represented in the race by Pace Whip, a four-year-old gelding by Raceful from The Whip. For a novice Te Broney has been shaping very satisfactorily in her work and she should not he disgraced when she makes her debut against betterseasoned hcrsos in tho Sylvia Park Handicap. Te Broney is a five-year-old mare by Kilbroney from Te Papapa winner of the Great Northern Guineas in and she is owned and trained by her breeder, J. D Eemp. Brother to Karapoti

The fact that he had some raring in June and has since been kept workinp regularly will probably enable .Jewelled Girdle to strip in better condition than most of the field in the Sylvia Park Flandicap and that should be a great factor in his favour on the sodden track. If he repeats his recent track form, Jewelled Girdle should make it very difficult for the others. Karohia, the three-year-old fullhrother to Knrapoti, owned by Mr. J. Hollier and trained by A. Cook, is hooked to have his first race in the Svlvia Park Handicap As he was a January foal, he has been .given time before being called upon to appear in public nnd he is a sluggish customer who may require some • racing to; sharpen him up Dignified March, an acceptor for 'the Ladies' Bracelet, is a nine-year-old Aus-tralian-bred gelding by March Along from Lady Respect, by Lord Foote and he was imported to New Zealand in 19.'50 He is now owned by Mr. E Grinimond and is trained at Pukekoht by F. R. Foster. It is some time since he appeared in public, but when previously raced in the southern portion ol the North Island he was not of much account. ARRIVAL OF VISITORS HORSES FROM AWAPUNI More visitors for the Pakurangn Hunt meeting on Saturday reached KUerslie yesterday, L. Knapp arriving from Awnptmi with Gainsay nnd M'ss Pango, and A. W. McDonald from the same centre with lied Bray. Knapp intended to bring three horses, but his novice hunter, Flockhart, by Beechworth, did not make the trip. F. R. Foster arrived from Pukekohe with Winding Trail and The Vamp. DUPLICATE COURSE RAIL TO BE USED AT ELLERSLIE Owing to the sodden state of the ground after an extremely wet winter, a duplicate coarse rail will be used between the five furlongs and the home turn when the Pakuranga Hunt meeting is held at Ellerslie on Saturday The duplicate rail is movable and has been erected about 10ft. out from the permanent rail, the object being to protect the inside of the course, portion of which has recently been returfed. This will be the first occasion on which the duplicate rail has been msed. and the only difference it will make is that the distance will be slightly increased. However, it should prevent the portion of the course where it is utilised from being severely cut tin which is not tv be desired >n view of the anproach of the spring meetings at Fllerslie.
