OVERCOME BY GAS
WORKERS' NARROW ESCAPE RESCUERS ALSO AFFECTED ; [bt telegraph—press association] CHRISTCHUECH, Tuesday Two employees of the Christchurck Gas Company, Limited, had a narrow escape from death when they were overcome hy gas in a manhole this morning. They were Messrs. G. W. Inglis and A. W. "Wylie, of Retreat Road, Avonside. It was due to the prompt and brate actions of a passer-by and a surveyor, Mr. C. W. Parton, that the two men wero rescued from the manhole before coming to serious harm. Both rescuers were affected by gas. Messrs. Inglis and Wylie were rushed to the Christchurch 'Hospital in a St. John ambulance. They made a good recovery, bqing discharged later in the day. Apparently one man was down the manhole in a small concrete chamber under the road and was overcome. His companion called for help and then went down to his assistance. The would* be rescuer was soon in difficulties also, but his cries had attracted a passer-by,-who went down to give assistance. Mr. Parton, wliio was working with a theodolite, about 120 yards further dovrn the road, sprinted along and helped the second man out with the aid of a rope.
