THE STRIKE PROPOSAL ENGINEERS AND CARPENTERS : MAJORITY VOTE IN FAVOUR V'i POSITION RECARDINC DISPUTE * V [BY TELEGHAPH—OWN WAIHI/ Tuesday A secret ballot on a proposal to strike' was taken to-day by members of the district branches of the Engineers and Fitters' and Carpenters and Joiners' Unions in compliance with the require, ments of the Labour Disputes Investigation Act, following the failure of the parties, the Martha Gold Mining Com. j pany (Waihi), Limited, and the uni ona -1 to reach a new industrial agreement' The ballot was taken at Waihi and Waii kino by Mr. F. Wilson, representing the Labour Department. Tlie voting was:— For a strike ...... 59 Against g Of the engineers 49 voted for, and " 1 4 against the proposal, and of the car. penters 10 voted for ; and 2 against. The position now-4s that in the event of any further negotiations that may <v take place between the parties failing to bring about a settlement, the-whole of the company's employees will be en- ' titled to strike after giving seven davs' notice of their intention to do so. Members of the Ohinemuri Mines and Bat* teries' Union and the Enginedrivers and Winders' Union recently carried a strike proposal.
