SAUSAGE BIRTHDAY

PORK BUTCHER'S FEAST THOUSAND INVITED GUESTS A thousand invited guests and 350 poor children partook of a " sausage feast " given by a pork butcher, Leopold Lahner, of Neubau, in Vienna, on June 23, to celebrate the 130 th anniversary of the introduction by his great-grandfather, Georg Labner, of the " Wiener Wursteln," the popular and famous Vienna variety of the German Frankfurter sausage. Herr Lahner received the congratulations of the Government, represented at the feast by Herr Heinl, a former Minister of Trades, as deputy of the present Minister. The " Wiener Wursteln " are usually sold in pairs. Thus they go in beauty side by side and are eaten hot with mustard or grated horse-radish. They have been imitated by many towns along the State railway, but never, it is claimed in Vienna, excelled, not even by their American grandchildren, the " hot dogs." Eaten with one of the renowned Austrian " Kaisersemmeln and washed down by a glass or more of cold beer they make a feast as delectable on a railway journey as on a Vienna supper table It is said that the late Emperor Francis Joseph enjoyed nothing better for his second breakfast throughout his life than a pair of the slender and savory " Wiener Wursteln " and a glass of Pilsener beer.
