OBITUARY
MR. JOHN FRANCIS MCCARTHY The death occurred at Ponsonby on Monday of Mr. John Francis McCarthy, after a sudden illness. Born in Bendigo, Victoria, 64 years ago, Mr. McCarthy was educated at his father's New Zealand schools at Heathcote Valley, Greymouth and Timaru. He entered the service of the New Zealand Railways, and rose to the position of stationmaster at Greymouth, but then resigned to take an executive position in the timber industry in that town. Mr. McCarthy came to Auckland 19 years ago, and became well known as a talented violinist. He was also a popular and enthusiastic member of the West End Bowling Club, which he joined after spending several years with the Ponsonby Club. In the West. End Club he was one of the best skips. Mr. McCarthy is survived by his wife, two daughters and three sons. MR. G. L. BRUNTON The death has occurred at Northcote, at the age of 78 years, of Mr. Gilbert Lang Brunton. He was born at Ayrshire, Scotland, and was apprenticed to the plumbing trade. Mr. and Mrs. Brunton, who were married at Dunoon, Argyllshire, Scotland, on February 28, 1879, and celebrated their golden wedding six years ago. came to New Zealand with their family in 1909, landing at Auckland. After a few months at Hamilton, they settled at Northcote, where Mr. Brunton carried on business as a plumber. Before coming to New Zealand Mr. Brunton was a past master of Lodge Carron, Stirlingshire, of the Scottish Constitution of Freemasons. He belonged to the Argyll and Southern Highland Volunteer Regiment, and was with his regiment when Queen Victoria reviewed the troops at Edinburgh about 50 years ago. He is survived bv Mrs. Brunton, five sons and three daughters. There are 23 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
