RETIRING HEADMASTERS
MR. LITTLEJOHN FAFIEWELLED TRIBUTES AT TAKAPUNA Tributes to the work of Mr. C. M. Littlejohn as head master of the Takapuna Grammar School were paid at a gathering held last nightnn the Gaiety Theatre, Takapuna, by parents of past and present pupils of the school." Mr. Littlejohn, who has been headmaster of the school since its opening in 1927, was recently appointed to succeed Mr. H J. D. Mahon as headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School. Mr. A. Harris, M.P., presided over a large attendance. Speaking on behalf of Takapnna parents, Mr. J. W. Williamson said that Mr. Littieiohn's gifts of personality, intellect and measured jnngment hfid rendered his hoadmastersbip singularly successful. The great improvements in the school grounds and playing field facilities had been largely achieved through his efforts.
Mr. E. Eldridge, who represented the 'i Devonport parents, said that MrLittlejohn's service had established si fine tradition and set a valuable example to the school pupils. In presenting Mr. Littlejohn with the parents' gift oi : a wallet containing a cheque, the chairman referred to the progress which had been made in secondary education on the North Shore under Mr. Littlejohn's direction He was sure Mr. Littlejohn would meet with similar success in his new appointment. The chairman also handed to Mr. Littlejohn a framed photograph, and said that it was the parents' desire that the photograph of the school's first headmaster should be hung in a , piominent position in the school. The presentation of a handbag was rtade to Mrs Littlejohn. . ; Mr. Littlejohn, in his reply, briefly traced the history of the school during: his term as headmaster, and said the roll-number bad grown from 218 to over 500.
During the evening musical items were rendered by Misses Mina Caltlo* and L. Woods, and Messrs. F. ESutherland, L. Barnes and Dr. Trevor De Clive Lowe.
DINNER TCi MR. MAHOS OLD BOYS ARRANGE FUNCTION The retiring headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School, Mr. H. J. "■ Mahon, is to be the guest of old boys of the school at a dinner arranged in his honour at the Hotel Cargen on Saturday evening. Members of the board of governors, past and present masters and a large gathering of punils will be present. . Mr'. J. Victor Macky, president or the Old Boys' -Association, will preside and, on behalf of old boys, will present Mr. Mahon with a set of engraved nlate in recognition of his 43 . venrß .valuable teaching service. Mr.' Macky. who has been associated with the school for many years, will propose the toas® to Mr. Mahon. The Mayor, Mr. Ernest Davis, an old boy of the school, will attend, and other speakers will be 1 rofessor A. P. W. Thomas, chairman of the board of governors, and Mr. J; Stlintoii, ex-president of the Jld Vos a Association.
