FATE OF LONE KAURI
DESTRUCTION ORDERED DANGER OF FALLING The Lone Kauri, one of the bestknown trees in the province and a landmark familiar to thousands of visitors to Piha and Karekare, will be cut down either this afternoon or to-morrow morning. For some .years the tree has been decaying and its destruction has been ordered by the Waitemata County Council owing to the risk of its falling across the road. Situated about two miles on the Auckland side of the junction of the Piha and Karekare Roads, the Lone Kauri is a magnificent tree. It was spared by the sawmillers, who cut most of the Piha and Karekaho bush about 40 years ago owing to its great size and commanding position. "There are sure to be many protests about the cutting down of the old trr*\ hut wo are loft no alternative," said Mr. L. F. Faram, engineer to the county council, last night. "If it is notremoved there is considerable risk of the tree falling and killing somebody. It would be sure to fall down within a few years."
