ASSISTING THE NEEDY
OFFER TWICE REFUSED COUNTY CHAIRMAN'S COMMENT Disappointment at the failure of arrangeriients to assist two destitute families was expressed yesterday by Mr. W. A. Bishop, chairman of the Wnitemata County Council. Mr. Bishop said that, following publicity given to a caso of an unnaturnlised Austrian with a large family, who was living in very poor circumstances near Albany, a resident of Mannrewa offered assistance. Tho resident offered the use of a four-roomed house, free of rent, with f'roo milk and vegetables, tho tenant being required to work only when not on relief work. However, tho offer was refused. An endeavour had -then boon made added Mr. Bishop, to give another large family in poor circumstances a chance to take advantago of the offer, and transport arrangements were made. Nevertheless, it was intimated by telephono yesterday morning that tho house was not considered suitable. "I fcol thoroughly disgusted," Mr. Bishop concluded.
