While his First Corps had to fight hard and to march far, until it seemed the limit of human endurance had been reached, Smith-Dorrien s Second Corps on Haig's left was being subjected by the powerful German right wing to an even more severe ordeal. Because he could march no further, Smith-Dorrien turned and gave battle at Le Cateau. Haig, in much better shape, twice offered support, but no repljfc was received and he continued his orderly retirement.
