APPEAL FOR DONATIONS
TWO REQUESTS DECLINED LOCAL BODY'S ATTITUDE CRIPPLED CHILDREN FUND The question whether local hodies should contribute to tho upkeep of benevolent and charitable institutions was discussed by the Waitcmata Elec-tric-Power Jsoard yesterday when requests for donations were received from two societies and were declined. , Tho first request was from the Auckland Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society and was declined* without discussion, the chairman, Mr. W. It. T. Leighton, stating that the board had a standing resolution on the matter. The Auckland branch of tho~ Now Zealand Crippled Children's Society, in appealing for annual revenue, stated that it hoped to receive an annual donation of £lO from local bodies in the Auckland province. Mr. J. Guiniven said that in his opinion tho wholo scheme was still "in tho air," as those at the head of affairs had not outlined a definite plan. In any case the onus was on tho State to provide for crippled children, and not on local bodies. Cripples could bo best assisted by granting them an annual pension so that thoy could live with their parents. Mr. G. Trovithick said that they should keep to a principle. The question was whether they should contribute to these institutions or not. Mr. Leighton said that they certainly could not pledge future boards to make contributions from their unauthorised expenditure. Mr. W. B. Darlow: Our job is to supply electricity and not to usurp tho Hospital Board's functions. On the motion of Mr. Guiniven it was decidod that no action bo taken.
