SCHOOL OF SHARKS

SIGHT NEAR BRISBANE SOME TEMPORARILY STRANDED A school of between 40 and 50 sharks, measuring from 12 to 15ft. in length, recently attracted a big crcnvd at Southport, Brisbane's most popular seaside resort, where for more than three hours the sharks were close in to the shore as they pursued shoals of blue sprat which were migrating to northern waters. Several of the sharks became temporarily stranded when they ventured too close to the shore in pursuit of their prey. Three members of the Southport Life-saving Club seized a 12ft. tiger shark by the tail as it lay stranded in about 18in. of water, but they released their hold when it lashed its 'tail viciously and made for deeper water. A number of sharks were shot with rifles and two were secured with harpoons, though oii-o of them broke the line and escaped with the harpoon embedded in its back. More sharks hare been seen along the Queensland Coaso this year than for many seasons.
