TIMBER FOR HOUSES
Sir, —In your issue of August 15 a : correspondent, " Pin us," seeks more information on the relative value of the pinus insignis tree. I have no hesitation in saying it has nothing like the durability of most of our " ordinary building timber." Let any one of " Pinus' 11 friends, who have been contending to the contrary, place a totara a rimu, a kauri and a pinus insignis fencing post in a marshy ground "for five years, and then examine the result. I suggest these conditions rather than a building, because I know it is a fairer and more acid test for durability. The pinus insignis is not, unfortunately, immune from the borer and only last jear I had ocular demonstration of this. One is glad to see this timber now utilised for butter boxes, but I am sure care is essential to see it is well seasoned. W. J. Elliott.
