BRAVE MAN'S MEMORY
DEDICATION OF A TREE ARBOR DAY AT OPOTIKI [bv telegraph—OWN correspondent] OPOTIKI, Saturday The memory of the late Richard Savage, Y.C. (Dick Travis), has been perpetuated by the planting in Opotiki of a totara tree by the Mayor, Mr. G. S. Moody, at the Arbor Day celebration. There was a large representative gathering of members of local bodies, teachers and pupils of the district High School. The Mayor paid a tribute to the pioneers of 50 years ago, who had planted trees for the beautification of the town, a work which had been carried on by enthusiasts up to the present day. Mr. J. T. Merry said it had been suggested to him that the tree planted by tho Mayor should be dedicated to the memory of the late Richard Savage, V.C., and that a suitable plate should be procured with an inscription. The matter was left in the hands of Mr. A. E. Payne, chairman of the School Committee. Over 50 native trees, mostly totaras, were planted by tho schoolchildren under tho supervision of Dr. Budd.
