LEAGUE CONTEST
INTER-ISLAND TROPHY
TO-DAY'S GREAT GAME
KEEN STRUGGLE EXPECTED WELL-PERFORMED BACKS Fast and spectacular Rugby League football is anticipated at Carlaw Park this afternoon when the North Island will play the South Island for the Courtney Silver Football. In past seasons the North representatives have shown sii|>eriority over the South players, but this year's visiting team is likely to extend the North thirteen to the utmost.
Much is expected of the South forwards which have always played a high standard of football. A good deal of the success of the South Island team would seem to depend upon the backs, which in past years have been disappointing. The visiting rear-guard includes J. Amos, who, on his recent form in Christcliurch, is one of the best backs in the code. Amos has had a lot of experience and is a good leader. Both McCarthy, halfback, and Young, five-eighths, are said to bo better inside backs than the South team has fielded for aome time. The South Island team has an advantage ol: five pounds in average weight, both in tho forwards and backs. The average weights are:— South Inland.—! Backs: list. 61b.; forwards, 13st. 111b. North Island.—Backs: list, lib.; forwards, 13st. 51b. A great deal of interest will tfentre in the play of P. Serra and W. McKneight, who have represented the South Island at Rcgby Union. Serra is a fine place kick and has been the most prolific scorer in Canterbury football. North will be represented by a strong thirteen. The forwards will need to play right up to form in order to give the backs the necessary opportunities. A great game sihould be witnessed under fine conditions. Many of the players are likely to secure New Zealand honours against the Australian team next month. Following are tho teams:—
