Taupirl.—Playing in an even game at Ngaruawahia to-day under ideal conditions, Taupiri defeated Morrinsville by 6 points to 6. A good chance to score came to Taupiri when Grogan kicked well down and followed fast to catch the fullback in possession. However, the ball went out, and Taupiri ordered a scrum. From the scrum the ball was hooked to N. Pene, who made a good run and Bcorod well out. Grogan's kick failed. Shortly afterwarda the visitors' forwards carried the ball over the line, only to be beaten for the force. A freekick to Taupiri took play near the visitors' line, where their bucks secured and carried to halfway. The Taupiri forwards were working hard and brought play to the centre of the field when half-time sounded. A clearing kick by Aitken was well taken by McNicol, and after a passing bout Davis scored well out. Grogan failed to convert. Aitken marked in front of the Taupiri goal but his place-kick was smothered by Brook. Davis made a good run for the home team, and with only the fullback to beat, ho passed, and the ball went astray. A great dash by Kelly ended short of the line, a force-down saving. Prom a clearing kick by Robinson Park secured and dived over for Aitken to add the major points. There was little to choose between the homo forwards, all working well. The backs combined better than the opposing rearguard. The visiting pack was beaten in the set serums, and this hampered the backs. The outside men were starved owing to tho first five-eighths being too selfish. Whangarei.—Before on attendance of 1500 at Kensington Park, the Whangarei representatives defeated Otamatea by 05 points to 3 in the final of the southern zone in the Harding Shield competition. Next Saturday Whangaiei will meet the winners of the northern zone to determine who will hold tho shield. The weather conditions were perfect and, had tho Otamalea backs shown combination, the game would have been even, as the forwards played hard, sound football. With .such men as Robbins (former Wellington representative), Weir (former Auckland representative), Pickering and Boos in the Whangarei back division, nothing but the soundest tackling could prevail. Pickering was in good form, as, in addition to scoring two tries, ho converted each of the five Whangarei tries, scoring in all 10 points. McKenzie. Finlayson, Herbert and C. White were the pick of the Whangarei forwards. Pohe, the diminutive Maori halfback, was playing well for Otamatea, but had to retire owing to injury. Edwards, at five-eighths, also was sound. Of the forwards D. Wintle, L. Cowan, L. Snelling and R. Bull stood out among a solid pack. Whangarei commenced scoring within two minutes when a nice cut-in by Boos resulted in Bobbins scoring. Pickering converted. Five minutes later Bobbins made a great run to score near the posts. Pickering again converting, and the latter player shortly afterwards picked up from a scramble near the posts, to dive over the line, and again Rdd the goal points. Otamatea's only score came when Cowan picked up from tho loose near the line. Homan failed with a difficult kick. After half-time Robbins made a fine opening and passed to Pickering, who again scored and added the major points. Bobbins scored the final try, cutting in nicely to outpace the opposition. SECONDARY SCHOOLS AUCKLAND GRAMMAR WINS MATCH AGAINST HAMILTON [from otr own correspondent] HAMILTON, Sunday The annual Bugby game between the Auckland Grammar School first fifteen and the Hamilton High School representatives was held yesterday afternoon at Rugby Park. There wa9 a good attendance, the weather being fine and the ground in good condition. Although the scoro was close. Grammar winning by 19—14, the class of play was not up to the standard usually produced by the two schools. High School was unable to field several of its best players owing to injuries received at a practice game, and this misfortune obviously weakened the defence. High School was first to score, Overington' kicking a good penalty goal. During the next five minutes tho forwards were active and Grammar was penalised for off-side play. This cost the visitors another three points. Overington again being successful with his kick. Then the Grammar backs were associated in a good movement, which Massey and Coughlan finished off, the latter scoring between the posta. Passmore converted. Grammar kept up the pressure and a few minutes later Jones snapped up near half-way, side-stepped several tacklers, and scored between the posts. Paßsmore was again successfid with the kick. Grammar was soon hard pressed and a short pass went out to the High School centre. Paterson, who was close enough to the line to drop over and score. Overington converted. Just before half-time Coughlan scored an unconverted try for Grammar, making the Bcore, Grammar. 13; High School, 11. Play in the first ten minutes of the second half was ragged and unenterprising. infringements being frequent. With a penalty kick from a difficult angle Overington was able to place High School one point in tho lead. For a while it seemed that the local team had a good chance of winnintr, but the Grammar defence at this stage was too sound. From a line-out at half-way Grammar staged one of the best back movements of the day, Coughlan. Thompson and Jones each handling before the lost-named scored in the corner. The kick failed. The next movement saw Jones break away again and score well out. Pa»smore's kick fell short. Hamilton was attacking at the end of the game, the final score being: Grammar, 19; High School, 14. Mr. E. Thorpe waa referee. WIN FOR MOUNT ALBERT [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Saturday There was an attendance of over 1000 at Kensington Pnrk this afternoon when the annual Bugby match between Mount Albert Grammar and the Whangarei High School wai played, and resulted in a win for the Auckland team by 17 points to 3. The conditions were ideal for good football, and ustially the two teams provide an even match. However, to-day the heavier Mount Albert forwards dominated the set scrums and the bafks played good football. The Whangarei forwards played well considering their lighter weight, but rarely have the bocks played so badly. This was especially noticeable in the handling of the ball, and in weak passing. Ward as fullback, and Green, five-eighths, were the two best backs in tho Whangarei team, while Hosking, I Martin and Rika were the pick of the forwards. ' For Mount Albert. C. Ivingßtone, N. Kingstone, Martin and Cato filayed well. I Gribble, at centre, was inclined to spoil movements by cutting in too much, although he played a good game. All the for-wards-played well. Shortly after the commencement Gribble potted a nice goal near tho posts. From a penalty Alison kicked a fine goal for Whangarei, making the scoro 4—3 in favour of Mount Albert. However, for tho balnnijo of the game Whangarei was defending, and trijs were obtained for the visitors by Martin (2) and Coxhead. C. Kingatone converted two. Mr. R. Morrison, of Whangarei, was referee, SCHOOLS' CONTESTS RUGBY AND BASKETBALL [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] OPOTIKI, Sunday In the annual contests between Opotiki and Whakatane nigh Schools played at Opotiki in splendid weather, the results were:—Basketball: Whakatane A heat Opotiki A, 13 to 11; Opotiki B beat Whakatane B, 15 to G.
