EWES LOST AT SEA

CORRIEDALES FOR URUGUAY FURTHER PURCHASES MADE To replace ten valuable stud Corriedale ewes which were washed overboard from the steamer Westmoreland, and which he had purchased in New Zealand for his father's estancias in Uruguay, Dr. A. C. Gallinal Heber, of Montevideo, has just concluded a second visit to the Dominion within a few weeks. Tho crato containing the sheep was iosit when the Westmoreland was about 600 miles on her way to Cape Horn, and when advised of tho loss Dr. Heber was on the Monterey on his way from Auckland to Sydney. Ho returned by the same steamer, and after making purchases in the South Island and the Wairarapa in replacement of the lost animals, he left Wellington for Sydney by the Wanganella last Saturday. On this occasion, Dr. Heber purchased 11 stud Corriedale ewes and two stud Corriedale rams. Two of tho ewes were secured in the Wairarapa, and the remainder in tho South Island. Tho sheep will be despatched to South America by the Huntingdon, leaving on August 22. Before sailing by the Wanganella, Dr. Heber said he had been very sorry to see so much made of his previous remarks concerning the Corriedale, and that some had taken up his criticism in the wrong way. His arguments, he said, had not been directed against the breed as a whole, but against imperfections in the manner of breeding. They hind been intended to help the farmer rather than to condemn his sheep. " There is no perfect breed in the world, 1 ' said Dr. Heber, "and we should not close our eyes to the fact that we can always improve. I myself am a lover of the Corriedale; I am enthusiastic about its qualities. I thought that farmers might pay some attention to what I had to say. and that tliev might benefit from the ideas I was asked to express."
