POLAND AND DANZIG
SERIOUS TARIFF WAR CLOSING OF THE FRONTIER NEGOTIATIONS SUGGESTED (Received August .4, 5.5 p.m.) DANZIG. Aug. 3 Poland closed the frontier at noon today to all imports from Danzig as a retort to Herr Arthur Greiser, president of the Danzig Senate. Herr Greiser has sent a Note to Poland defending the opening of the Dan-zig-German frontier as essential to avert disaster. He declares that Poland's measures are unwarranted, and are paralysing Danzig's economic life. He offers to negotiate. Poland recently refused to allow goods destined for Poland to pass through Danzig unless duties were collected in Polish currency. Tim resulted in a complete cessation of the transit traffic, on which Danzig depends. As a sequel a state of emergency was proclaimed in Danzig and Herr Greiser was given dictatorial powers to save the citv from starvation. Herr Greiser proclaimed that imports of foodstuffs, coal and other essential commodities henceforth would be duty free, thus opening the GermanDanzig frontier.
