NEW HORSES AT EPSOM COMPASS AND ARCOLIS Tho pacers Compass and Argolis arrived from tho South Island last week and have joined S. M» August's team. Compass, a seven-year-old gelding by Man o' War from a Harold Dillon mare, is no stranger to Epsom. At the winter meeting in 1934 ho did not handle the soft track to advantage and gained only a third placing at a mile and a-quarter. Ho was again unsuccessful at tho last summer meeting, but ran fourth in 3.18 4-5 from a 3.33 mark. He has now received a concession and is assessed at 2.21, 2.57, 3.34 and 4.48. Argolis is a six-year-old by JNelson Derby from Maud Logan. As a four-year-old he raced 12 times without gaining a place, but last season won at Hororata in 3.28 off 3.43, and at Cheviot in 2.14 4-5s from 2.23,, while ho also recorded four thirds, going 3.46 off 3.59 for a milo and fivo furlongs. Argolis starts tho new season on 2.22, 2.58, 3.35 and 4.50. Both pacers have boon acquired by Mr. A. lies, of Tauranga. NOT TOO OLD AT FIFTY B. CARSLAKE STILL WINNING "Brownio" Carslake, the Australian jockey, is almost fifty years of ago, but ho retains his form in tho saddle. Ho has won good races in England this season, and ho found time to make a visit to Vienna, whore ho won tho Austrian Derby. Carslake rode in Austria-Hungary, Germany and in Rumania, before the war, being retained by somo of tho richest and most influential racing men on the Continent. Ho won scores of big prizes, as also did S. Ferguson, who was associated with Carslake, and who ofton caused a surprise by winning on tho second string. Carslake's engagement to ride Premysl caused much excitement in racing circles in Vienna, and'when lie won tho classic; by a head ho received a remarkable ovation. Apparently Premysl had a narrow shave, as Carslake had to rido him hard to stall off a colt called Situtunga, who was ridden by tho jockey who had won tho Czecho-Slovakinn Derby on Premysl. Carslake won tho Gorman Derby on Chilporic in 1911.
