REPRESENTATIVE GAMES WHAKATANE BEATS OPOTIKI SCORING IN CLOSING STAGES Further representative Rugby matches were played in country centres of the Auckland Province on Saturday afternoon. There was an exciting finish to a match between Whakatane and Opotiki at Whakatane, the home team putting on 13 points in the last quarter of an hour, to gain a victory by two points. The following results were forwarded by correspondents of the Herald:— Te Puke.—The annual Rugby match for the Phelnn Memorial Cup was played here between Taurangn and Te Puke in fine weather, and a bright and fast game was witnessed by a moderate attendance. Fielding a heavier team, Tnuranga dominated the scrums and line-out play. Te Puke, however, more than held its own in loose play. Tauranga won by 12 points to 4 11. Whltianga.—Whitianga, 11, United, 3. Dargaville.—ln a friendly junior representative Rugby match played at Dargaville Northern Wairoa met Otamatea. The visitors led by 3 points at half-time. Smith kicking a penalty goal shortly after the commencement. After the change over Northern Wairoa showed better combination. and tries by Osbaldiston and Haile gave it the lead, the final score being: Northern Wairoa, 6; Otamatea, 3. No senior games were played. Third grade: Dargaville, 28. Tangowahine, 3: Ruawai defaulted to High School: Southern defaulted to Kaihu Valley. Whakatane A representative Rugby match was played at Whakatano between Opotiki and Whakatane. Tho weather conditions were ideal, and the ground had hardened after three days' bright sunshine. Opotiki led by 17 to 6 yntil tho last 15 minutes of play, when Whakatane came with a rush, adding three tries in succession, two being converted. A notable feature of the game was the fast forward play by both sides, dribbling rushes by the Whakatane forwards being responsible in a great measure for the quick scoring in the last minutes of play. The final score was:— Whakatane, 19; Opotiki, 17. Tauranga.—A Rugby match for the Shalfoon Shield junior competition between Bay of Plenty teams was played here in ideal weather between Tauranga (holder) and Rotorua (challenger). The game was fast and was mainly between the forwards. Gnrroway scored for Rotorua five minutes after the stort, and ncaring the end of the first half M. Murray (Tauranga) kicked two penalty goals in auick succession. Tauranga leading at the interval by 6—3. The second half was very even, and a quarter of an hour from tho end Hall scored for Rotorua. the game ending in a draw, 6 all. Tauranga retains the shield. Tauranga had previously withstood challenges by Te Puke and Whakatane. Juniors: A match between the Tauranga High School fifteen and a lightweight Rugby Union junior team was won by the latter by 13 points to 6. Paeroa.—ldeal weather conditions pre-, vailed for the match between Ponsonby and Paeroa. There was a good attendance of the public, and the Jubilee Band played several selections. Passing between Gooch, Jamieson, Hoses and Ramsay enabled the last-named to score between the posts. Jamieson missed the easy kick. Offiside play gave Moore a penalty kick and he sent the ball over, making the score 3-all. From loose play Jamieson gathered the ball and transferred to Moses, who scored. Pearman converted. A pretty movement saw Moses outpace the opposition and score. Jamieson converted. Ramsay finished off another passing bout with a try which Jamieson converted. The_ Paeroa forwards were rewarded for their solid work when Carrick scored. Ponsonby hooked the ball and Woolly set' his backs going, for Moses to score. Paeroa responded by Swann opening up play and Lloyd scored. Solomon threw tlfe ball right out in tight play and, after most of the backs had handled. Singleton scored. At half-time the score was: Ponsonby, 24; Paeroa, 9. The Paeroa forwards worked hard from the opening of the second half and Handley scored in the corner. In a back movement, Swann defeated Mosea and Pearman, and transferred to Lloyd, who scored. Paeroa made another determined effort and Masters scored. Findlay converted. From a scrum on the line Woolly secured and scored on tho blind side. From a line-out Moses ran in. received the ball and passed back to Pearman, who scored. Jamieson converted. An evenly-contested game between the Netlierton and Hikutaia junior teams resulted in a draw, with 110 score. Third grade: Thames High School Old Boys. 9. Paeroa, 3. Cambridge,—The second Hamilton-Cam-bridge representative Rugby football match was contested at Victoria Square. Hamilton fielded a slightly heavier team than the local fifteen. Hamilton scored first. Griffiths crossing. Shortly before half-timo Hamilton again attacked and. -when in a handy position, it was awarded a free-kick and Pardington goaled. Cambridge replied with a try by Wilson and the half-time score was: Hamilton. 6; Cambridge, 3. Cambridge maintained the pressure upon resuming and Stewart from a scrum whipped the ball to Hogan and Reid, who scored in the corner. Then Voice broke away unopposed to score a fine try for Hamilton. Pardington converted. Cambridge slowly regained lost territory and from a scrum Stew'art flashed the ball to Hogan, who brilliantly sidestepped the defence to score. Hewitt evened the score. Following a clever forward rush Coombridge scored for Hamilton, Pardington converting. In a moment the Cambridge forwards we|:e back on the attack and Hewitt scored and again evened by converting. Pukerimu, 3. Matamata.—Matnwata retained the Peace Cup at Bedford Park, when Taupiri, the second challenger, was defeated by 12 points to 5. The playing conditions were perfect and there was a fair attendance of spectators. In the first few minutes Taupiri was penalised and W. H. Carlson kicked a goal. A brilliant passing movement by the Matamata backs ended in Colo scoring between the posts. Then fast following up by Grogan gave Taupiri a further try, which he converted. Another passing bout by t" c Matamata backs ended in German scoring wide out. In the second spell Matamata scored a further try, German ngain crossing. Te Awamutu With the Waipa representative team away at Waihi there was no contest in the senior championship of the Waipa Rugby Union, but keen interest was shown in the junior and third grade championship matches. In the juniors, Old Boys and Suburbs were well matched, and a keen contest ended in favour of the former by 8 points to 6. Te Awamutu had little difficulty in defeating Te Mawhai by 21 points to 9. Whangarei,—There wan an attendance of 1500 at Kensington Park this afternoon to witness the first representative match of tho season in the Harding Shield contest. Whangarei met Northern Wairoa in the elimination series of the southern zone, the former winning after an exciting game by 9 points to 6. Robbins, former Wellington representative, now playing in Whangarei, was the best back on tho field, and among his team mates, Pickering, Roos and Weir were tho elect of the' backs, while Tapper, at fullback, was always safe. Among the forwards, Mclnnes, Herbert, McKenzie and Clotworthy were the pick. For Northern Wairoa, Panapa. Hackett and B. Morresey played well in tho rear division, and Ross, Berkhardt. Flavell and M. Morresey led a hard-working pack. Soon after the commencement of the game Robbins dummied after a good back movement and scored near the posts. Another good back movement resulted in R. White scoring wide out. A fine run by Pickering and Robbins gave WTiangarei a 9 —o lead when Pickering scored a great try, the movement going three-quarters of the length of the field. Northern Wairoa retaliated and M. Morresey scored wide out from the loose. Shortly after Ross gained a fine try, diving through a line-out and taking the opposition by surprise. REPRESENTATIVE GAMES VICTORY FOR HAWKE'S BAY GOOD COMBINATION OF BACKS [by telegraph—rßEss association] NAPIER, Sunday Better combination among the backs won a victory for Hawke's Bay against Poverty Bay at McLean Park yesterday, the match ending 37 to 12. Each side made numerous tactical errors and there was very little difference between tho two packs. There was only a moderate attendance. At times the standard of football in the first spell was below what local spectators were accustomed to seeing in club games, but towards the end of the second spell the game livened and until the finish of the game the spectators took a great deal more interest than they did at the beginning. _ Mishandling by the inside backs cost Poverty Bay several points. The side had an advantago on the line-otits, but the set scrums on the whold seemed fairly evenly distributed, with perhaps a shade in favour of the winning team. At half-time tho score was:—Hawke's Bay, 8; Bay. 6. It was a strenuous period, in which the forwards played a major part. In the second spell the home side enjoyed one of its characteristic revivals, and play became very lively, both sides throwing the ball about. A record crowd assembled in excellent weather, hundreds of West Coasters making a 200-miles motor journey for the occasion. The match wss distinguished by sustained passages of magnificent forward play in which the heavier' Marlborough pack generally had an advantago. The backs of both Bides took a big part in a thrilling game, but the visitors lacked penetration. Marlborough's inside backs were always dangerous and it was only West Coast's superb tacking and smothering tackles that kept the score down.
