SOCIAL CLUB FOR BLIND
ANNUAL SMOKE CONQERT The second annual smoke concert of the Auckland Social Club for the Blind, held at the institute on Saturday evening, was most successful, and was greatly enjoyed by the gathering, which numbered about 90. The president, Mr. D. McPheo, welcomed the patrons, Sir Clutha Mackenzie and Mr. S. Donaldson, Mayor of Newmarket, Mr. C. Fravling, a former institute supervisor, and representatives of other organisations. A programme arranged by Mr. Bart Clark was presented. Responding to the toast of the New Zealand Institute for the Blind, proposed by Mr. F. Titchener, Sir Clutha Mackenzie mentioned that the institute roll of 175 was a record. He said the rowing shed, being built on the site allocated by the Auckland Harbour Board, alongside the St. George's shed, was expected to be completed in a month, and would be available for the coming season. The club had steadily progressed since its inception, both in social and sporting activities. Last year the first athletic sports meeting was held on the Auckland Grammar School's ground in Mountain Road, and this year's fixture would take place early in December. The action of various musical and social organisations in forwarding invitations to functions was appreciated. A tribute was paid by Mr. C. Maloney to the readiness always displayed by conductors and drivers of trams to render assistance to the blind, who, he said, felt a deep debt of gratitude to them.
