FIFTY YEARS AGO
SEVERE EARTHQUAKE ALARM IN CHRISTCHURCH An alarming earthquake was experienced in Christchurch half a century ago. No damage was reported, howevel. following is a message concerning IW earthquake which appeared in the Zkai-and Hkhai.d of July 29, 1885:"There was-a severe shock of earthquake shortly before eight on Sunday night in Christchurch. Service was proceeding in the churches and, the congregations were considerably alarmed.
