GOOD DEMAND FOR LAMBS SHOUT SUPPLY OF WETHERS The following private cablegrams, dealing with business in the Smithfield market at the close of last week, have been received: — Bank of New Zealand.—"Wethers: Smaller supplies have caused prices to harden. Ewes: The market is depressed owing to absence of demand. Lambs: There is a good demand and prices are steady. Trade is brighter, with a better demand. Quotations: Wethers, light, 3-£ d to 4£d per lb.; heavy, 3Jd to 3;d; ewes, 2d to 2£d; lambs, twos, 7id to 72d; eights, 7d to 7id: fours, <d to 7Jd: seconds, 6Jd to 62d. New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. —Lamb: The market is very firm with prices better. Mutton: There is better trade in wethers at the advanced prices. Ewes: The market is dull and unchanged. Beef: the market is quiet, owing to low prices of chilled beef. NewZealand porkers: There is better inquiry. but trade is slow. New Zealand baconers: The market is steady and unchanged. 5 GOLD AND SILVER QUOTATIONS IN LONDON (Received July 28, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON. July 27 Fine gold is quoted to-day at £7 0s sid an ounce, compared with £7 0s 6Jd yesterday and £7 0s 9d on Thursday. Silver was quoted yesterday at 30 3-16 d an ounce spot and 30Jd forward, compared with 30 3-1 Gd and 30 5-16(1 on Thursday. The quotation for silver at per fine ounce yesterday was 32 9-16 d, same as on Thursday. WHEAT IN AMERICA (Received July 28, 5.5 p.m.) CHICAGO.
