CARNEGIE GRANT
CULTURAL EDUCATION £IO,OOO FOR DOMINION PLAN TO BE FORMULATED As a result of a tour of inspection in New Zealand last year by representatives of. the Carnegie Corporation, of New York, a sum of £IO,OOO has been made available for the assistance of museums and art galleries in the Dominion. Professor C. E. Hercus, of Ota go University, is the convener of the committee that has been appointed to act minister the fund, the other members being Professor T. A. Hunter, of Wellington, Bishop Williams, of Waiapu, Mr. A. T. Donnelly, of Christchurch, and Mr. W. H. Cocker, of Auckland. A preliminary meeting of the committee has been held, and various suggestions as to how the money might best be spent have been submitted to the authorities of the museums and art galleries. They in turn have been invited to make suggestions for the consideration of the committee. At a later meeting the committee will formulate a complete scheme which it will forward for the approval of the Carnegie Corporation. Metropolitan museums have been asked to consider whether they could carry out an investigation into some new branch of educational activity. In the case of the Otago University Museum, Dr. Hercus has asked the University Council if it would be prepared to carry out an experiment in the development of temporary exhibitions with particular reference to the farming community. He said that attention had been drawn to the relative neglect of agriculture in the museums, and it was felt that Otago was most favourably placed for such an experiment.
