JEWS IN BERLIN

NAZIS' NEW CAMPAIGN SEQUEL TO RECENT RIOTS POLICE CHIEF SUPERSEDED (Received July 21. G. 35 p.m.) BERLIN, July 20 As the result of recent anti-Semitic riots in Berlin. Admiral von Levetzow. chief of police of the city, has resigned. Count Wolf von Helldorf succeeds him. A communique announces that the police will further co-operate with'the Nazis to defeat Communists' subversive activities and reactionary movements and Bolshevik and Jewish arrogance. Count von Helldorf was sentenced to six months' imprisonment in 1931 for attacking and insulting Jews in Berlin. Fresh anti-Jewish disturbances have occurred in Berlin s West End. Crowds of people paraded the streets shouting. "Down with the Jews!" several of whom were dragged from cafes and beaten. The police, however, arrested the assailants in spite of the crowd s hostility. Count von Helldorf's first ordinance orders the closing of Jews ice creain shops at 7 p.m. to prevent undesirable demonstrations.

Other examples of the Nazis' campaigning include the Reich Minister of Justice ordering public prosecutors throughout Germany to counter by speedy prosecutions and heavy sentences, without respect for persons, all attempts by Roman Catholics to split up the community.
