REPORTS OF MANAGERS Golden Dawn (Owharoa). —Development, No. 3 level: Crosscut east from face of drive south on No. 1 reef from winze driven 12ft. The crosscut is being put in to cut the magazine reef, where rich ore was in the main No. , 3 level and stores above. Drive north on No. 1 reef advanced 51ft. The reef is still carrying a good wall and little water is coming out of the face. The country j rock if of a splendid class'for carrying reefs, being interlaced with mineral seams. Bottom intermediate level: Drive south on No. 1 reef advanced 22ft. from old pass; reef 2ft. 6in. wide; £2 2s lid a ton. Drive south on eastwall branch of No. 3 reef driven 29ft. Reef 2ft. wide; £1 Ss 6d a ton.-Drive south on reef going into westwall driven 20ft. The reef here averages 2ft. wide, but is split into three branches, all the branches carrying good value; £lB 19 8d a ton. Stoping was continued in the No. 3 and bottom intermediate levels.

Mahakipawa (Marlborough). The arch drive from the south end of No. 2 blocking strip hit a very pronounced smooth water-worn wall. This is what we had been looking for, and we know the location of both walls and the present direction of the gutter. This gutter is going further away from the old workings and was missed by the old miners. The complete absence of gold for the last 50ft. is explained by the fact that in this section the bottom is hard and smooth, and is on a grade of one in fire. As the difference in vertical height between the Golden Gate and Craig's shaft is about 44ft., equal to a grade of one in !L4, the steep grade we are on must flatten off. When this occurs, and the bottom gets softer, we can again expect gold.
