ALBERT STREET FIRE
FOUR-STOREYED BUILDING SMART WORK BY BRIGADE FLAMES QUICKLY SUPPRESSED Damage to the roof and machinery on the top floor, with slight damage by water to stock on the lower floors, was caused by a fire which broke out on Saturday afternoon on the premises of F. and W. Fowler, sheet metal workers, at 112 Albert Street, City. Smoke was seen issuing from the top floor of the building, which is a four-storeyed concrete and brick structure, by a taxi driver, and the fire brigade was summoned. Engines from the Central, Western Districts and Parnell stations attended.
The fire had started near the foundry on the top floor. By prompt work the firemen had the outbreak under control before it had spread to other floors. A load of hose was taken up the inside of the building, although the fire was giving off a good deal of smoke.
Extensive machinery on the top floor was not seriously damaged. Workmen were engaged in replacements and reconditioning throughout the week-end, and all the plant was restored to working order. The building is insured for £OOOO and the plant for £3OOO, both with the New Zealand Office.
