LINER'S MISHAP
NIAGARA DAMAGED
delay at victoria PERIOD FOR REPAIRS MR. LYONS' DECISION CATCHING MARIPOSA if By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received July 19, 6.15 p.m.) VICTORIA. July 18 Tb.e liner Niagara, showing less damage than was feared as the result of her collision with the motorship King Egbert last evening, was tied up at a pier this morning. Forty feet of railing on the port bow, C deck, and 10ft. of the superstructure on B deck, were shorn away and three plates were buckled above the, water line. The Prime Minister of Australia, Mr. J. A. Lyons, who had embarked on the liner for his homeward voyage, said the passengers took the collision philosophically after the first excitement, and no one was injured. The crash occurred at 8.10 p.m. as many of the passengers were sitting down to see motion pictures. These were resumed • an hour later, and a dance was held while the liner made back to port through the fog. As the Niagara may be delayed for a week or 10 ten days while repairs are effected, Mr. Lyons left Victoria this evening for San Francisco, where he will catch the Mariposa, which is due to sail on July 23. Twenty other Niagara passengers signified their intention of also returning to Australia via San Francisco.
