PREVENTING WHEEL-SPIN
PRECAUTIONS IN .THE MUD r When the driving wheels of a car get on to wot ground, sand, shingle or mud and will no longer drive, it is usually fairly hopeless to persist in trying, without special preparation, for the more the wheels spin the deeper will "the car become einbedded. Deflating the rear tyres to about hall the normal pressure is usually an excellent way of providing a grip when wheelspin is not violent. A rug or an old coat, or branches of scrub placed under the driving wheels will help things considerably if the situation is serious. If all these methods fail and the car has to be towed in a restricted space, do not forget that passing the rope round a handy tree trunk or a convenient gate post will servo to change the direction of pull and allow the towing car to remain away from the treacherous surfaco from which the towed car is being hauled.
