FARMERS AND EXCHANGE
Sir, —I note all your correspondents who criticise Mr. Austin Carr have concealed their names. I can 'only tee reasons for lauding Mr. Carr's outspoken speech. I contend Mr. Carr's criticism is not unwarranted, as "Butter-fat" tries to make out. The majority of farmers do not consider the Minister of Finance has adopted a wise course in raising the exchange rate, as everything has got dearer. The only wise course would have been to reduce mortgages on land to the economic productive value of the land. Why did not the Minister of Finance look back five years, instead of giving a five-year plan (consisting of starvation), with the prospects of finally being sentenced to another five years' I have been a Reformer for over 40 years, but I should like now to see a fusion of the Labour and Democratic Parties. I consider the country's money is being frittered away by the Minister of Finance and his retinue going to England. We have a High Commissioner there. If he is not competent to attend conferences, why not recall him ? H. MaexAlfriston.
