COLD SNAP IN PROVINCE PIPES AT TAUPO BURST LOW HAMILTON TEMPERATURES Heavy frosts were experienced throughout the province in the weekend. At Taupo they occurred on three consecutive mornings, culminating on Saturday in 14 degrees of frost, which was the lowest temperature registered since the commencement of the keeping of records in 1929.

The water at inside taps was frozen and did not commence to thaw until 9 o'clock. Several outside taps and water pipes burst. The cold mornings have been followed with bright sunshine and practically no wind. Bitterly cold weather was experienced iu the Waikato. A thermometer at Ruakura registered 12 degrees of frost on Saturday, while in Hamilton 10 degrees were recorded. The isky was overcast at Hamilton all day on Saturday and the lack of sunshine made the day the coldest experienced in the district this winter. The mean temperature on Saturday altternoon was 44 degrees. There was slight rain in the evening. At Cambridge the thermometer fell to 20 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday, when the heaviest frost of the winter occurred.

Cold mornings have also been experienced at Whangarei, which was covered with a mantle of frost on both Saturday and Sunday mornings.
